Andrea Michalek
Andrea is a Philadelphia-based technology management consultant.
She founded Topular LLC and
1-800-CTO in February 2001.
Andrea consults as an interim technology executive for software companies.
Whether it's acting as the CTO of a startup, or leading a key initiative at a large company, she thrives on utilizing technology to business advantage.
She specializes in building products and services that make complex technology problems as simple as they should be. Examples include:
Andrea is also the founder and managing director of
Unit of 1. Unit of 1 is a growing networking group that supports solo entrepreneurs in the Philadelphia region. The Unit of 1 website is equal parts business networking, community blog, and member-contributed, expert articles. It is also an example of how Andrea combines open source technology, her extensive background in information retrieval and content management with business opportunity.
She is the former founder and Chief Technologist of EchoFactor, a spin-off division of Infonautics Corporation. Infonautics was an Internet information company acquired by Tucows Inc. Andrea was an early employee of Infonautics and was responsible for directing the technology organization as well as new product development. These products were early pioneers in the search engine and ecommerce areas, and she has received a patent for her work there.
Prior to joining Infonautics, Andrea was involved in the development of software for medical applications - first with GE and later with Picker International.
Andrea was awarded the "Thirty under 30" award in 2001 by Philly-Tech Magazine, as one of top thirty individuals under the age of thirty in the Philadelphia area technology market. She has been quoted in over a dozen business and technology magazines including Forbes.com, Home Business Magazine, Wall Street Journal College Journal, Small Business Computing, Tech Republic, Tech Web, and Search CIO.
Andrea has been a speaker at both academic and industry events focused on information retrieval on the web. She has held an adjunct faculty position at the Erivan K. Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph.s University teaching a MBA-level management skills class. She is also a frequent speaker on the topics of entrepreneurship, leadership, small business, and women in technology.
She earned a Bachelor of Science in computational biology from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master of Science in computer science from Villanova University.
